VIKING

Release version 1.1 (RC1)

Original table by Bally, August 1980.
Coverted to VP by Dave Sanders, June 2001.

Sound and music taken from various old Capcom games (logged using
the Callus emulator).

Thanks to Randy Davis for Visual Pinball, to Joe Entropy for
table advice, and to all the folks on the Shiva forum.

Known issues: Table sounds are wrong. This was entirely my decision-
the original table is a late 1980 machine and most likely uses the
same sound board as either Future Spa/Space Invaders or Eight Ball
Deluxe, and neither set of sounds would have suited the table, in my
opinion. I did consider using the Williams pinball sound effects from
the same period, as used in Gorgar, Flash and Black Knight, but
decided instead to improvise and experiment, using sounds from
elsewhere to add more atmosphere. This was also a test to see what VP
could allow me to do using samples alone (all the sounds are .wav
files), as well as to gauge what may be possible once that MP3 support
is added. I'm more than happy with the result myself, but if the music
irritates you can at least turn it off.
In addition, I had to wing it with a lot of the rules, as the info
I had was somewhat incomplete in terms of what activates what feature.
The nature of the timers in this game is also complete guesswork.
Viking however borrows heavily from both Mata Hari and Playboy, so
where appropriate I've implemented the rules according to how those
two tables worked, and it feels 'right' (though no doubt inaccurate).
The basic scoring should be correct however, since that's all listed
on the table itself.
Bug reports should be sent to me at ealadubh@beeb.net . Thanks.

RULES

Top saucer scores 3000 points and does the following:

First time: lights right channel for 5,000 points.
Second time: lights bonus multiplier 2X.
Third time: lights bonus multiplier 3X.
Fourth time: lights bonus multiplier 4X.
Fifth time: lights bonus multiplier 5X.
Sixth time: lights outside lane for 25,000 points.
Seventh time: lights inside lane for Special.

Left target value starts at 1000 points. Lighting A & B lanes advance
target value to 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 points. Making A & B a
further time scores Special.

Top left saucer scores 3000 points. Dropping a left target lights
saucer to collect bonus and kick ball upwards. Saucer then resets.

Drop left target bank to allow access to Valhalla target. Hitting the
Valhalla target resets bank and scores 30,000 points the first time,
Special the second time, and repeats.

Drop right target bank to score and increase bank value from 2000
points to 4000, 6000, 8000 and 10,000 points. Dropping right targets
in 1-2-3 order (top to bottom) lights bank to score 10X lit value
next time. 1-2-3 order also lights 5000 point rollover for Extra Ball,
then Special thereafter.

Centre spinner value starts at 10 points and increases to 100 points
after 10 spins, and 1000 points after another 10 spins. Spinner will
reset back to 10 points if not spun within a 15 second time limit.
Limit is extended back to 15 seconds when spinner is spun.

Timer target scores 1000 points or 50,000 points when lit. Target is
lit for last 5 seconds of every minute of the current ball in play.

Left and right outside lanes have a bounceback feature to help keep
the ball in play. (Tip: bounceback is weak, so a well-timed nudge
often helps to give the ball extra power to return through the gate.)

A ball-save is active for the first 15 seconds of each ball to award
an extra chance should the ball drain during that time. 'Shoot Again'
light will flash when ball-save is about to expire.

Tilt penalty: ball in play.

Special awards one replay.

1 replay awarded for a score of 450,000 points (3-ball play) or
750,000 points (5-ball play).
